An On-grid solar system will only work till grid power is present. In case of a power cut or grid failure, your PV system will automatically shut down.

This occurs due to a safety feature called anti-islanding. Shutting down the system ensures that the energy generated does not pose any risk to the maintenance personnel working on the grid.

But frequent shutdowns can affect your solar ROI. Luckily, there is a way around this problem! You can use your diesel generator to start your on-grid system.

However, you will need a DG PV Synchronization device to do this. Let’s understand why.

What is DG PV Synchronization?

On-grid inverters require reference voltage from the grid. However, a diesel generator can provide this reference in the absence of the grid, but there are some stipulations.

Unlike grids, you cannot add your surplus solar energy to the generator because it is not built to receive power. Back-feeding energy in a generator can damage the device and pose a fire risk.

For optimum functioning and maximum fuel savings, a generator has to run up to at least 30% of its capacity. For example, if your Diesel generator has a capacity of 100kW, then it has to power a minimum load capacity of 30kW.

This is where a DG-PV Synchronizer comes in!

This smart device communicates with both the diesel generator and solar inverter to power your PV system even during blackouts.

The synchronizer will make sure that the generator runs up to 30% of its capacity. Once that requirement is fulfilled, the PV system will be instructed to start generation.

Moreover, if the solar system produces excess power, the device will limit production and ensure that no electricity is being fed to the DG. This is why the DG PV Synchronizer is also called a zero export device.

Example:
If DG Capacity is 100kW and your demand is also 100kW, the DG PV device will ensure 30 kW of demand is met through DG and the rest 70 kW through solar panels.

Benefits:
1. You can use your on-grid solar system even during blackouts.
2. Since only a small portion of demand is met through DG, you end up saving fuel.
3. If solar generation goes down, the device will raise DG power to meet demand. This results in a reliable power supply.

Can a Low Capacity DG be Used for Reference?

Many assume that since a Diesel generator is just there for reference, you can buy a low-capacity diesel generator for the job. But we do not recommend it.

Solar works best as a secondary source of power. This is because your generation can fall due to external circumstances such as cloud cover, rain, etc. But your diesel generator can compensate for this shortfall.

Thus, it is always advisable to invest in a DG that matches your load capacity.

Where Can You Buy a DG PV Synchronizer?

For the most reliable device, opt for Ornate Solar’s advanced DG PV Synchronization Device, Vyasa. This intelligent controller is powered by edge computing and can be seamlessly integrated with all types of solar inverters and diesel generators.
