Who would have thought that a solar panel and a parking structure could be so effective in achieving green initiatives? TGS, an oil and gas company, adopted this strategy to achieve its goals.
DESCRIBING A PARKING STRUCTURE AND SOLAR Power
TGS, a Houston-based company, provides energy intelligence and data to clients worldwide. The company’s ambitious goal for 2030 is to achieve net zero in 2021.
The company has committed to a net-zero emission target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This includes emissions produced at the company’s headquarters, as well as indirect emissions from electricity purchased. TGS has a huge goal in Houston, where the grid’s electricity is typically non-renewable.
TGS’s net-zero goal could be achieved by converting the company’s headquarters from fossil fuels to solar power. The TGS facilities team decided that a solar canopy would be able to provide much-needed shelter from the heat in the parking lot for employees after performing their due diligence. It would also bring the company closer to its goals.
After speaking with several solar panel companies, TGS turned to the team at Freedom Solar. We worked with TGS and the city of Houston to create a solar parking structure that met city codes and provided maximum energy output.
Hear from the TGS Team
Mary Ann Bordes, Director of Facilities and Administration at TGS, explains that the Freedom team understood the triangular relationship between the landlord and city well.
This system will produce approximately 901,710 Kilowatt Hours (KWh) per year. This is enough energy to cover nearly 60% of Houston’s facility’s consumption. This project will allow TGS to reduce its CO2 emissions globally by 30%. It is a significant milestone on its journey towards sustainability and waste reduction.
TGS CEO Kristian Johansen says that the decision to install solar panels is both environmentally and financially beneficial. Solar energy will save TGS money over time as the energy produced increases year after year. Johansen: “We are thrilled to be able to offer a solution which meets our employees’ need for covered parking, and is sustainable in line with our zero-carbon initiatives.”
The solar parking structure is built to last. It will produce clean energy for at least the next 25 years while also helping to create a more resilient and stable Texas electricity grid.
