I have written a lot about how solar energy can transform people’s lives as well as society. It helps people to live more powerfully and offers lessons for decision-makers in government.
This is how some of the same lessons have shaped me and my company:
I faced a career change in 2011, but I already knew that I wanted to become an entrepreneur. I was interested in work that helped people live sustainably. I began looking for ways to turn my passion into a successful business.
Solar was a natural fit for the company: there was a clear need for clean energy, a growing customer demand, and a burgeoning technology. Tales of poor service from competitors were legendary.
We thought that if we built a company that was really focused entirely on the consumer, we could make it easy for people to buy and install solar panels, that delivered great results and that gave them one point of contact if something went wrong, we would have a huge advantage in an industry that is growing rapidly. We also had a secret: Adrian Buck had already founded Freedom Solar, an industry leader known for his craftsmanship and expertise, a few years before I arrived. It was on a good path.
Freedom Solar has a DNA that reflects some of its core values. Our business model is a great source of some of these values. I’ve talked about how policymakers and governments do better if they focus on the people. Well, I also know this is true for businesses.
Freedom Solar has a culture that is based on my values. Getting out of your comfort zone is one of the most important. This is the best advice I have ever received. I’ve encouraged my children, friends, and teammates to follow it.
It means being willing to take risks, be open and honest, and face challenges with a positive attitude. Risk-taking is essential for growth.
